Introduction to The Sixteen Puzzle

Sixteen is a clever 4×4 grid puzzle where you cyclically slide rows and columns to reorder numbered tiles from 1 to 16, initially shuffled into a random configuration. Your goal is simple yet challenging: restore the tiles to their natural order—from 1 to 16, left to right and top to bottom—by sliding entire rows or columns cyclically.

Unlike traditional sliding-tile puzzles where you move one tile into an empty space, this grid puzzle game allows you to shift any full row left or right, or any full column up or down. Each move wraps around, so tiles that slide off one edge reappear on the opposite side. This mechanic introduces a unique twist that requires strategic planning and spatial reasoning, making every solution satisfying to achieve.

How to Play The Sixteen Puzzle?

Slide the grid squares around until the numbers are in consecutive order, starting from the top-left corner.

Click the arrows on the edges of the grid to shift an entire row or column left, right, up, or down. The square that moves off one end reappears on the opposite end.

On PC, You can use the arrow keys to move the position indicator around the edge of the grid, and press Enter to shift the selected row or column in the indicated direction. You can also move tiles directly. Place the cursor over a tile, hold Ctrl, and press an arrow key to move both the tile and the cursor together. Hold Shift instead to move only the tile. Pressing Enter toggles Ctrl mode (press Enter again to release it), and pressing Space toggles Shift mode.
