Introduction to The Unruly Puzzle

Unruly is a deceptively simple yet deeply engaging grid logic puzzle. Played on a square grid, the goal is to fill each empty cell with either black or white so that three key constraints are met:

  • No three consecutive squares of the same color appear in any row or column (i.e., no runs like “BBB” or “WWW”).
  • Each row contains exactly half black and half white squares (for even-sized grids).
  • No two rows are identical, and no two columns are identical.

resembles a stripped-down version of Tic-Tac-Toe or Binairo (also known as Takuzu), but its emphasis on uniqueness and balance adds a distinctive twist that demands careful deduction and pattern recognition.

The puzzle always has a unique solution that can be reached through pure logic—no guessing required. As you fill in cells, you’ll use constraints like “if two whites are together, the next must be black” or “this row can’t match that one, so these cells must differ” to gradually uncover the full pattern.

Click a cell to toggle between black and white, or right-click to mark uncertain cells. Visual cues help you spot violations of the “no three in a row” rule or duplicate rows/columns in real time.

Unruly is free, and runs directly in your browser, with adjustable grid sizes (typically even-numbered, like 6×6, 8×8, etc.) and randomized layouts for endless replayability.

How to Play The Unruly Puzzle?

Colour every square either black or white, such that:

  • No three consecutive squares—horizontally or vertically—are the same color.
  • Each row and column contains an equal number of black and white squares.

Left-click in an empty square to turn it black, or right-click to turn it white. Click again in an already-filled square to cycle it between black and white and empty.
